I have just started to enter data to try out the software. The bank account refuses to start with the opening balance I have set and seems to have invented a number which refuses to go away. This means I cannot get the bank account to match the bank statement.
Any ideas?

The 'Opening Balance' figure in Solar Accounts refers to the balance of the account at the start of your current financial year. You can see this date by clicking menu Setup > Financial Year.
The simplest way to resolve the problem is to set your 'current' financial year to be the year in which you start entering bank transactions, then edit the opening balance to match your statement.
