I have been using both Solar and Thunderbird for a long time - but all of a sudden Solar fails to affiliate with Thunderbird.
Has something been changed deep within the bowels of the package?
Or has Thunderbird become allergic to Solar?

We're not aware of any changes to Solar Accounts that would affect the integration with Thunderbird. Here are a number of things to try:
a) Ensure that Thunderbird is set as the default email client as described here:

b) Try doing a system restore to an earlier date as described here:
http://pcsupport.about.com/od/fixtheproblem/ht/system-restore-windows-7.htm
c) Re-install Solar Accounts and Thunderbird.
