I set the start / end of the financial year as from Jan 1st.... my accountant wants the year to finish April 5th... how can I change that please

You cannot change the start date of your first year. However, in practice this is not usually a problem as you can choose a custom date period when you view reports (eg. Profit and Loss, etc).
For the second year you can change the start date. Once you have entered all transactions up to April 5, click menu Setup > Financial Year > Start a new financial year. Then set the new year start date to April 6.
