i want to revert to a previous financial year, i have gone to tools but the option is blanked out

I'm afraid you cannot change the financial year earlier than the initial year, but in practice this isn't usually a problem. There is nothing to stop you entering transactions for the previous year. Then you can configure your reports to limit the scope to your previous year.
