Can I put a description of work in the first quantity line with no value. At the moment i have to put a value of .01 which looks daft.

Sorry no, in Solar Accounts you cannot have an invoice with zero total. A work-around is to export the invoice to a spreadsheet and change the price using Excel.

If its any help I use a Multi Line Descrition, on the first line I put the description of the work carried out then leave a blank line then start the pricing on subsiquent lines.
