We have just given a small amount to a charity that we strongly support, how should I account for this in Solar.

I would create a new expense account called 'Charity Donation' and allocate to this account in the Money Paid Out window.
Also, you should check with a tax advisor or HMRC to see if the donation is tax-deductible. If not, you will need to ensure you exclude it from your tax return calculations.
