Is there a way to add an account grooup then sub account when adding a prurchase invoice rather than getting halfway through and having to cancel just to create said accoutn

No, you cannot create a group account while you have the purchase window open. However, you can create the sub-account (group it under any existing group account), finish creating the purchase invoice, then create the group account and change the sub-account to be grouped under the new group account.
