If the asset is not a vehicle, you will need to create a new asset account by clicking menu File > New > Account. Ensure the account type is Asset, then enter the name of the Account (eg, 'Tools and Equipment')
To record the purchase, record a new Money Paid Out transaction allocated to the asset account. You should also periodically record depreciation on the asset.
