I am a current user of the offline system (have been for years). Due to MTD I am going to move over to the online version. Do I finish this current VAT period (to end of March) before moving over so that MTD starts from 1st April 2019.....or do I do it right away?

Our understanding is you will need to submit your VAT returns using MTD-compatible software from 1 April. So you should sign up for Solar Accounts Online in order to submit your VAT return for the period ending 31 March. This page gives more information about switching to the online version:
